RENO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA HOSTS YOUNG SOPRANO
TO PERFORM MAHLER AT MASTERCLASSICS 5

RENO, Nev. (Dec. 6, 2004)Eighteen-year-old soprano Devon Guthrie will be the featured soloist for the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra’s (RPO) MasterClassics 5 on Sunday, March 6 and Tuesday, March 8, 2005. Guthrie will perform Gustav Mahler’s most restrained symphony, No. 4 and the orchestra will also perform Leonard Bernstein’s Suite from On The Waterfront at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts.

In 2003, Guthrie was named a Davidson Fellow Laureate and received a $50,000 scholarship from the Davidson Institute for Talent Development – a national non-profit foundation based in Reno whose mission is to support profoundly gifted young people.  Guthrie has built an impressive list of musical accomplishments in her young career, including performances based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Langston Hughes set to music by American composers such as Aaron Copeland and Richard Hundley. Guthrie is currently a freshman at the Manhattan School of Music.  The Davidson Institute (www.DavidsonGifted.org) is underwriting Guthrie’s performance.

“Devon’s voice is very mature for someone so young,” said Barry Jekowsky, Music Director of the RPO.  “The audience will be amazed at the talent of this young woman.“

Also on RPO’s program is the Suite from On The Waterfront by Leonard Bernstein, Jekowsky’s one time teacher and mentor.  Jekowsky is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the movie’s premiere and the music of this great American composer.

All ticket holders are invited to join Jekowsky for a free, pre-concert presentation, “A Preview from the Podium,” a half-hour prior to each performance to hear him speak about the composers and the works the orchestra will perform.

Tickets start at $25, and the RPO is advising interested parties to purchase tickets early, as this likely will be a sold-out show.  Discounts are available to seniors, students and groups of 10 or more.  For single tickets, call the RPO at (775) 323-6393.  More information about the Reno Philharmonic is available at www.renophilharmonic.com.
