Located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, The Davidson Academy of Nevada (www.DavidsonAcademy.UNR.edu) is the first free public school of its kind for profoundly gifted middle and high school students. To attend The Davidson Academy, students must score in the 99.9th percentile on accepted intelligence and/or achievement tests; perform at a required academic level; exhibit intellectual and academic achievement; demonstrate motivation, social and emotional maturity, and an overall readiness for a fast-paced educational environment; and are, or intend to be, residents of Nevada. Unlike traditional school settings, the Academy’s classes do not group students by age, but by ability. Students learn in a unique educational setting where the abilities, strengths, and interests of highly intelligent young people are encouraged and supported. Profoundly intelligent individuals score in the 99.9th percentile on IQ tests and have an exceptionally high level of intellectual prowess. These students are three standard deviations above the norm on the bell curve, so they are at the extreme end of the intelligence, or IQ, continuum. The Academy opened in 2006 thanks to state legislation that allowed for the creation of a “university school for profoundly gifted pupils.” All students develop a Personalized Learning Plan optimally matched to each student’s skill and ability level. Subject areas include language and literature, mathematics, science, history, foreign languages, health and physical education, and the arts. Extracurricular activities include Community Crusaders, online newspaper, chess club, MathCounts team, yearbook and Student Council. Families have moved to Reno to attend the Academy from Texas, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Washington, California, Louisiana, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, New York, and one family from Australia. The Davidson Academy is affiliated with the Davidson Institute for Talent Development (www.DavidsonGifted.org), a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting profoundly gifted young people. The Institute offers several programs for students living anywhere in the U.S. including a summer program, scholarship, and a free, national consulting service for parents/students.
