(Reno,
Nev.)
– KNPB Channel 5 Reno welcomes The Davidson Academy of Nevada,
the first public school for profoundly gifted students of its kind in
the nation, as the second floor tenant in its building at 1670 North
Virginia St. on the University of Nevada, Reno campus and looks
forward to future collaboration with Academy students and faculty.
KNPB Channel 5 will benefit from the three-quarters of a
million dollar build out of the second floor by the Davidson
Institute. While the first
floor of the KNPB Channel 5 building is owned by the station, the
second floor was funded by the University of Nevada, Reno as a
last-minute addition when the facility was built 10 years ago on
university-owned land. The
second-floor space has been left unfinished until now.
“The KNPB staff members have been extremely helpful in
working with us through the planning and construction process,” said
Stacy Colwell, director of The Davidson Academy. “We look forward to
continuing this positive relationship once the students arrive.”
The Davidson Academy (www.DavidsonAcademy.UNR.edu)
is the brainchild of former educational software entrepreneurs and
founders of the Davidson Institute, Bob and Jan Davidson. The Academy
will be temporarily located in the KNPB Channel 5 building for the
next two to three years until a permanent location on the University
of Nevada, Reno campus is designated. Once the Academy moves into its
permanent location on campus, the improvements to the second floor of
the KNPB building will become the property of the station and will be
used to facilitate its growth.
“This project with the Davidson Academy is beneficial to
both the school and the station. It’s
truly a win-win situation,” said Dave Dehls, KNPB Board President.
“We are grateful for the substantial in-kind contribution being made
to KNPB by the Davidsons.”
Completion of the second floor build-out is on track for
early July 2006 when the new facility will be used for afternoon
courses during the THINK Summer Institute (www.THINKSummerInstitute.org).
A program of the Davidson Institute, THINK is a three-week summer
program on the University of Nevada, Reno campus for profoundly gifted
students ages 12 to 15 where the can earn up to seven university
credits.
The Davidson Academy of Nevada is scheduled to open Monday,
Aug. 28, 2006 with more than 30 profoundly intelligent middle- and
high-school level students – many moving to northern Nevada with
their families to attend the school.
Davidson Academy students will be able to accelerate through
the required middle- and high-school curriculum at a pace appropriate
to their abilities and motivation until they become fully matriculated
into the University through accelerated course options. Many of them
will then proceed through undergraduate and graduate coursework at an
advanced pace as they meet the appropriate prerequisites.
“The fact that we will be neighbors with this extraordinary
group of students is exciting,” said Kliff Kuehl, KNPB President and
CEO. “We will be looking for opportunities to collaborate with the
Academy throughout the school year.”
Licensed to the communities of Reno and Sparks, KNPB broadcasts
to communities throughout northern Nevada and eastern California.
Based in Reno, the Davidson Institute for Talent Development is
a nonprofit foundation founded in 1999 by Bob and Jan Davidson.
