DAVIDSON ACADEMY OF NEVADA RECEIVES GRANT FROM MCGOWAN CHARITABLE FUND

(Reno, Nev.) – For the second consecutive year, The Davidson Academy of Nevada has received a $50,000 grant given by the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund (www.mcgowanfund.org). This award helps provide Davidson Academy students with opportunities to explore their academic interests and support their talent development through the Student Development in the Pursuit of Excellence initiative.

“The McGowan Charitable Fund is delighted to support the programming at The Davidson Academy. Their holistic approach in advancing the lives of these gifted students exemplifies our mission and dedication to systemic change through education,” said Diana Spencer, executive director of the McGowan Charitable Fund, which was established to realize and enlarge magnificent human potential. Its vision is to impact lives today, create sustainable change, and empower future generations to achieve their greatest potential.

The Davidson Academy utilizes the McGowan Fund grant for three purposes:

  • Expand opportunities for learning based on students’ Personalized Learning Plans;
  • Offer workshops to students and staff on topics related to extreme intelligence; and
  • Increase resources for college preparation and career and guidance counseling.

The McGowan grant has already made a significant impact at the Davidson Academy of Nevada. To expand educational opportunities, the school offered classes in art, drama, psychology and French, which were all selected due to student interest. Academy staff has established weekly club meetings that offer students information on topics including organization, test taking and anxiety, study skills, perfectionism, nutrition and finals preparation. Finally, to better assist students with college preparation, the Davidson Academy has subscribed to Naviance, an online college planning system that provides students, parents and staff access to college planning and test preparation resources to help streamline the process.

“We are so grateful to the McGowan Charitable Fund for their generosity,” said Colleen Harsin, director of the Davidson Academy. “Our students benefit in many ways from the new programs and we hope to continue our partnership into the future.”

Established in 2006, The Davidson Academy of Nevada is a free public school for profoundly gifted middle and high school students located in the Jot Travis Building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. To learn more about The Davidson Academy, please visit www.DavidsonAcademy.UNR.edu.
